I am so excited to have found natural solutions for everything from cleaning products to temporary ear discomfort and anxious feelings for my family. I had lived like many other people for years using the latest over-the counter prescription drugs, household cleaners, personal care products and more when we realized we were suffering side-effects that we could no longer live with or no longer wanted to choose to live with.
Severe hives & rashes
When my son Ammon was just a year and a half old he developed his first ear discomfort. Of course we took him to the pediatrician and got an amoxicillin prescription. After a couple of days, this rash started developing and just got worse until he had red,swollen, itchy patches of skin all over his body. It was obvious that this was a reaction to the prescription he had taken and luckily with time he was able to recover.
Extremely aggressive behavior with antibioticWhen Ammon came down with another bout with ear discomfort the next winter at age 2 and a half the pediatrician prescribed their next choice of drugs since he was allergic to penicillin. The drug was Omnicef. Unfortunately Ammon had a horrible reaction to Omnicef! He became extremely upset and was in a rage. He screamed and cried and became physically aggressive towards himself and others, saying terrible things and behaving very irrationally. He is my fourth child I knew this was not normal behavior at all, even for a sick child. These types of reactions in children are documented all over the internet, including on
this site but unfortunately at the time, the doctors would not concede that these were side effects from the drug since they claimed it has been proven not to cross the blood brain barrier.
Natural ReliefFast forward one year later to age 3. Ammon had had a little cold and so when he started holding his ear and complaining that it hurt I knew what the problem was. This time, I was so grateful to have my essential oils (pure and natural plant extracts) on hand. I put a couple of drops on a cotton ball and softly set it in his ear. Since he is an active little boy I didn't expect him to keep it in place but to my surprise he did! I'm sure the reason was because it soothed his pain. About an hour or two later the cotton ball fell out. I expected that I would continue using the oils for the ear discomfort until he felt better but he never complained of any pain again. WOW!! I have noticed that when the oils are used immediately, at the onset of a problem, they work very quickly.
More recently, my teenage daughter was on vacation without me and jumped off a cliff into the water. She developed a condition called
swimmer's ear where she was in pain and couldn't hear well. By the time she returned home and told me about the problem it was 2 or 3 days later. She reluctantly started using the oils but planned to go to a doctor appointment. When the appointment interfered with a party she wanted to attend, and she noticed that the oils were helping she cancelled the appointment. It took about 3 days total to get rid of all of her symptoms but the essential oils on cotton balls inside her ear and behind her ear worked for her as well!
I loved researching the study on pubmed.gov that explains how they work for ear discomfort for anyone interested in the science of the essential oils and how they compared to other alternative treatments.
